EWR Airport Transfers

Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty sits across the Hudson River in New Jersey, about 16 miles from Midtown Manhattan. It's a major United Airlines hub and often has cheaper international fares than JFK or LGA. The tradeoff is ground transportation — rides into Manhattan involve either the Lincoln Tunnel or George Washington Bridge, both of which add tolls and traffic time. The AirTrain connects all terminals to Newark Penn Station, where NJ Transit and Amtrak run trains to Manhattan's Penn Station in about 25 minutes.

Ground Transportation Tips

  • 1Rideshare pickups at EWR are on the departures level, not arrivals. Follow signs to the designated app-ride pickup area outside your terminal.
  • 2NJ Transit from Newark Penn Station to NY Penn Station costs $16 and takes 25 minutes — the cheapest way into Manhattan by far.
  • 3The Lincoln Tunnel is the fastest route to Midtown but tolls are about $15-17 (E-ZPass rate varies by time of day). This is built into your rideshare fare automatically.
  • 4If you're heading to Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, ask your driver to take the Holland Tunnel instead of going through Midtown traffic.
